On Thursday, Alphabet&#8217;s Waymo began <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/waymo.com\/blog\/2026\/01\/waymo-rides-at-sfo\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\">offering<\/a> fully autonomous rides at San Francisco International Airport (SFO).<\/p>\n<p>There are some limits. For now, SFO access is restricted to &#8220;a select number of riders.&#8221; However, access will gradually expand over the coming months. The service is also limited to the SFO Rental Car Center (pickups and drop-offs) at launch. Waymo says it will expand to other airport locations, including terminals, &#8220;in the future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The San Francisco Standard<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/sfstandard.com\/2026\/01\/29\/waymo-begins-operating-sfo-just-time-super-bowl\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\">notes<\/a> that SFO is now the third airport in Waymo&#8217;s repertoire. The San Francisco launch follows the company&#8217;s service at <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/waymos-driverless-cars-will-start-driving-on-freeways-in-three-us-cities-171654775.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\">Phoenix Sky Harbor and San Jose Mineta<\/a>. As for the Bay Area, Waymo now serves more than 260 square miles in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, this isn&#8217;t Waymo&#8217;s only appearance in the news this week. On Wednesday, the company said <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/transportation\/a-waymo-robotaxi-struck-a-child-near-a-school-152446302.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\">one of its robotaxis struck a child<\/a>, who sustained minor injuries. The incident took place on January 23 in Santa Monica.
