The gas plants will have a combined power output of 5,200 megawatts, and the transmission lines will operate at 500 kilovolts.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the company will help fund up to 2,500 MW of new renewable resources. It also agreed to a memorandum of understanding for future nuclear power development. The 4-million-square-foot Richland Parish, LA, data center will be <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/meta-announces-huge-new-data-centers-but-they-could-gobble-up-millions-of-gallons-of-water-per-day-174000478.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\">Meta&#8217;s biggest yet<\/a>. The companies plan to &#8220;build, bring or buy the new generation resources and electricity needed to satisfy their new energy demands, paying the full cost of those resources.&#8221; However, the pledge lacks a binding agreement or any enforcement mechanisms.<\/p>\n<p>The shift in tone comes in response to growing anger from local communities over the rise of <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/why-do-ai-data-centers-use-so-many-resources-171500010.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\">power-hungry, environmentally damaging<\/a> AI data centers. A December <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/navigatorresearch.org\/views-of-ai-and-data-centers\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\">poll<\/a> found that 60 percent of Americans \u2014 including majorities of Democrats, Republicans, and independents \u2014 support more AI regulation. Just this week, Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez introduced a bill to <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ai\/sanders-and-ocasio-cortez-introduce-a-bill-to-pause-us-data-center-construction-174451974.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\">force a moratorium on data center construction<\/a> until meaningful regulations are passed.<\/p>\n<p>We could easily file this and similar moves as Big Tech&#8217;s latest attempt to convince voters and officials that it can be trusted to do right without enforceable regulations.
