Bioware shared that it had <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/new-mass-effect-game-from-bioware-161639408.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:2;pos:1\">started work<\/a> on the new game in 2020, but Electronic Arts&#8217; <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/ea-confirms-it-will-go-private-in-55-billion-acquisition-133841614.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:3;pos:1\">decision to go private<\/a> have naturally called the future of the series into question.<\/p>\n<p>Gamble&#8217;s blog post doesn&#8217;t share many details about the new game beyond the fact that Bioware &#8220;is heads-down and focused exclusively on Mass Effect.&#8221; What does seem more clear is that the game could have some kind of connection to the Mass Effect TV show <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/entertainment\/tv-movies\/amazon-is-making-a-mass-effect-television-show-185111285.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:4;pos:1\">currently in development<\/a> at Amazon. &#8220;The writers room is going strong, and we\u2019ve got a lot figured out about how it fits within the Mass Effect canon, and where it sits in respect to the new game,&#8221; Gamble says. Notably, the series is set after the events of the original trilogy of games, and follows a new story in the universe&#8217;s timeline. &#8220;It won\u2019t be a retread of Commander Shepard\u2019s story.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/gaming\/dragon-age-the-veilguard-is-beautiful-in-every-way-193013807.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:5;pos:1\"><em>Dragon Age: The Veilguard<\/em><\/a>, Bioware&#8217;s last game, was not the smash hit <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/analysis\/520290\/dragon-age-the-veilguard-sales-ea-bioware-layoffs\/\" data-i13n=\"cpos:6;pos:1\">EA apparently wanted it to be<\/a>, and Bioware has appeared to go through a period of contraction in response. High-profile senior staff were <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/dragon-age-developers-reveal-theyve-been-laid-off-after-bioware-puts-full-focus-on-mass-effect\" data-i13n=\"cpos:7;pos:1\">let go in January 2025<\/a>, and even before the game was released, EA began <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/bioware-cuts-around-50-jobs-to-become-a-more-agile-and-focused-studio-211513365.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:8;pos:1\">moving Bioware developers<\/a> to other studios. EA itself may also be adjusting its larger game development strategy. Following its proposed acquisition, the publisher <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/gaming\/ea-partners-with-the-company-behind-stable-diffusion-to-make-games-with-ai-222253069.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:9;pos:1\">announced a partnership<\/a> with Stability AI in October to create new AI-powered tools to better streamline its development process.<\/p>\n<p>The Mass Effect series is beloved, and <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.engadget.com\/mass-effect-legendary-edition-mass-effect-review-150052114.html\" data-i13n=\"cpos:10;pos:1\"><em>Mass Effect: Legendary Edition<\/em><\/a>, the 2021 remaster that packaged all the trilogy&#8217;s DLC and games into a single package, was a great reminder. With a new entry and a TV show in the works, Bioware seems poised for a comeback.
